puts on tie and pulls the knot so tight it cuts off air to my lungs
“tImE tO Go tO wOrK”
HOW TIGHT ARE THEIR TIES
Not tight enough for my tastes. I would tighten them all the way.
Yeah WTF actually
They’d like to respond but they are choking.
Oh I thought they said they were JOKING before they fainted!
I think they meant choking
This makes the business world and politicians make sense.
Hevent worn a tie for any reason other than a funeral in the last 20 years. I refuse. If I show up to work in a T-shirt with no holes I’m dressed up.
Its funny being the only one at the senior staff meeting in an Iron Maiden T while everyone else is suit and tie. Good thing I’m good at what I do
Good for you, think about it, everyone shows up to work with a noose tied around their neck, slipknot and all. How is that not a vulnerability? Someone could grab the skinny end and choke you out. Police don’t wear them, if they have to wear ties they use clip ons for just that reason.
It wouldn’t be as easy as it sounds.
A properly tied full Windsor is awfully tight and takes a little wiggling to tighten up into the collar. Considering that the tail is generally put into the loop in the back of the tie, it would be hard to get to. Even if you did grab it, it’s not likely going to cinch tighter by just dragging on it.
Now that’s not to say you couldn’t still just grab the tie in the front, pull it around to the back, and choke the absolute shit out of someone! Using that logic though we also have to do away with scarves, purse straps, and necklaces below a certain “gage”.
I have seen videos of fights of people grabbing the small part of the tie and pulling on it, yeah it’s not tailor made for choking but it does cinch up when you pull it. One such video a guy was doing that and the choked guy head butted him, took care of that problem.
Still though, it’s a vulnerability, and there is no legitimate reason to wear it. Now you want to talk about wearing chains, I would agree they are too, jewelry is a waste and vanity and often a vulnerability as far as I’m concerned, excepting wedding rings. Although one can argue it’s a store of value you carry around in case you need to pay for something. Scarves are too that’s right, as hankerchiefs are, but you aren’t tying them around your neck they are just wrapped around.
Ties make no sense. It’s literally a strip of cloth tied around your neck that serves no useful purpose at all. It’s idiotic that they have managed to survive as a part of modern clothing.
What? It’s a piece of fashion: it doesn’t need a “purpose”. You want to wear monocolor onesie jumpsuits everywhere?
If someone wants to wear one of their own choice, that’s fine. It shouldn’t be mandated. The issue I have is that wearing a strip of cloth around your neck somehow makes you a “professional” in the eyes of others, and not wearing one means you are being “unprofessional”.
Look, if you are not wearing a giant arrow hung around you kneck that points at your dick, how are people going to know where you keep your dick?
I keep it in the same place everyone else in my country keeps it. In the White House.
That dick doesn’t work and we all know it. The party is running the show, he’s running on autodick, falling asleep at televised meetings, making even less sense than normal, he can barely work up a good nazi rally now, they leave him alone with an avowed enemy of the party, like Mamdami or Petro of Colombia for a half hour and he’s best friends forever with them, while his handlers facepalm.
I’d argue fashion is a waste of human effort IMO.
Make functional outfits and comfortable ones. Literally nothing else. “Formal” should not even be a word at all, much less a genre of clothing.
Designers making wearable art pieces is kinda silly, but it gets by with being art, but that’s as far as I’ll allow the line.
Saving a useless accessory that’s been mandated for certain jobs/purposes is actually obscene to me. It being “fashion” is no help, and given that it’s the only reason it exists, it should be fucking deleted from our awareness.
Fight me.
You can’t debate what is worth human effort without defining a human’s purpose.
And I don’t trust anybody who tries to tell me what humanity’s purpose is.
Fight me
I will not fight you, I agree with what you said
You dare directly go against what I said? That’s it!
A duel at dawn, then.
*Star Trek: The Motion Picture intensifies*
They designate you as a “loyal dog of the company”. They symbolize a leash
Literal flyest thing ever this this fucking sucks actually.
Maybe it’s to hide the line of buttons on the shirt.
What an idiotic article (and website in general, looks Buzzfeed-tier). From its linked source:
Negative cerebrovascular effects can be expected by compressing jugular veins and carotids
No shit.
by a necktie.
Nobody is wearing a tie that tightly, and even if it is deliberately made that tight when you put it on, it’s not like a noose, it’ll loosen on its own almost immediately as you start moving around. There are no springs in a tie maintaining the tension.
Shirt collars don’t move the way necks do, so it really depends on posture and movement, I’d say my posture was about the best in my day when I was standing in front of a mirror putting the tie on and judging my appearance, and then 20 minutes later I’d be sitting at my desk hunched forward and it would be a lot less comfortable, so I could see it.
Also I remember from hours and hours of starting at old men’s necks in church how their flesh would spill out the backs and sides of their collars while they sat there listening to the preacher.
If you don’t cinch it up too tightly, it’s no more constricting than buttoning the top button on the shirt. Not that wearing one makes any sense, but it’s not trying to kill you, either.
Oh great so it’s only utterly pointless and uncomfortable.
This is my privileged white guy battle that I will fight to my final day. Yes it is low stakes, but it is a battle someone needs to fight. I will never wear a tie, and I will view anyone who does as choosing to uphold one of the biggest systems of oppression I regularly deal with.
Yeah, I rarely do the top button and rarely keep my tie tight. I’ve got it down to a science to where it looks right, but still loose, because I cannot stand stuff around my neck.
Or, rather, you do stand stuff around your neck with the right motivation.
Money is an excellent motivator.
Neckties belong in business, but not all business. I threw a big stink when I worked at Kohls. Women could wear polos, slacks, etc. Men had to wear dress shirts and ties, slacks or dress pants. It’s retail, ties can get caught on a lot of shit (registers, conveyors, doors, etc). Took a year but the Regional manager finally saw the light and later it became corporate policy. Women also couldn’t wear necklaces for the same reason.
How tight are they tying them?!
Don’t tie it so tight 🤷♂️
red ties agree
Fuck the Man, ditch the tie!
the only good thing about wearing a tie was the glorious fealing of pulling it down as you walked out the door at the end of the work day and unbuttoning that top collar button or two.
so THAT’s the equivalent of me taking off my bra at the end of the day! Someone was asking this on Lemmy earlier.
To me oftentimes is the belt on formal days I do tie it a bit tighter than normal and it bites into my dad bod.
lol. as I was writing the response I kinda wondered if women did that walking out the door. Was just asking my wife and she mentioned liking having the ones that open in front so she could free them up a bit when she got in the car. I have not had to wear ties in a long time and it has been awhile since she has worn real ones as she went jog to camesals now.
I believe the word you’re looking for is “camisole.”
yeah my realtionship with spelling is kinda rough even with often used words.
I realize now my comment could have come off as judgy. It wasn’t; just meant to be informative! I wouldn’t even call that an often-used word, so I thought it reasonable that you’d just never seen it written before!
It actually helped me understand what the other poster was talking about, so yeah, informative.
no no. My grammar and spelling are atrocious but I like to be a bit self depreciating when I can.
I usually wait until I get home, but I have undone it in the car before. And the bras that fasten in the front are superior in every way.
At weddings, I’ll have it nice and orderly for the ceremony, then loosen it up a bit and undo that first button for the reception. Really letting loose, lol
Decorative nooses have always been a weird thing IMO. Like “gee, id like a dangling piece of fabric that, if it gets caught on something, chokes me and may pull me face first into heavy machinery”
I never understood why anyone would want to wear a tie. It’s a capitalist noose and at the same time also so unnecessarily dangerous.
Back in the day, people generally had fewer shirts and they were typically the same color, usually white. A tie was developed as a way to have a bit of varying color for a suit without needing as much fabric.
Because I never truly need to wear one and I like the patterns and style of the ties I own? What kind of question is this?
People just like to accessorize. Not everything is that deep lol
I get your point, I use pocket squares to accessorize but to each their own. My mental association of ties revolves around IBM staff (and similar) being forced to wear ties for no reason other than “management decision”. For me the only thing I can think of when I see a tie is the leash of the wealthy class.
Then you are upholding this system of capitalist oppression through participation.
They come from a time when heavy machinery didn’t exist. They’re descended from fancy scarves.
Well, you don’t wear them around heavy machinery. Unless court and similar settings are heavy machinery in the figurative sense.
Elevators are pretty heavy.
But idk, maybe you’re like, extremely buff
I, for one, am a fan of bringing back the ascot. (but perhaps not during the height of the summer months.)
Feels like you could say the same about any clothing/jewellery other than the bare essentials, but maybe Lemmy is the wrong audience for fashion (fuck being forced to wear ties, obviously)
Growing up in the Mormon Church, I remember a time some asshole just unilaterally decided to redo my tie in a harsh knot that was too tight. Didn’t ask if it was okay, just went right ahead and decided my own safe, loose knot wasn’t good enough or something.
Just having a complete flashback to that because of this article. Obsession over minute details is just laughably silly when it leads to health problems.
I hope now that you’re grown up you have no need of hysterical frauds like religion?
Remember all those bankers, lawyers, and managers wearing ties each and every day? Now you know why they act like they do.
BTW, the tie not only reduces the oxygen supply to the brain, it also increases the risk of strokes by about 10%.
