Jeff Geerling has been Raspberry Pi’s number one corporate defender going on a while now. This video, which is extremely tepid in any “criticism”, is no exception.

I don’t dislike the guy, and I don’t believe he’s doing it maliciously. He just seems like overly nice guy who wants to maintain a certain public persona.

If I had to guess, I’d say not many things give him more anxiety then when someone he knows, or has met, doesn’t like him, or is upset with him. But in this case, it’s a corporation.

But in his defense, for him and the way he’s historically treated this company, this video is one or two steps below scorched earth. So… I guess that’s an improvement?

Because it’s a simple and cheap way to significantly expand a devices capabilities and use cases e.g. cheap offline storage network, or other LAN only services. Or simply to provide your own basic NTP, or backup NTP, as these boards are based off ARM SBCs so perhaps adding 1PPS GPS modules would be possible.

I’m sure the business customers will be happy for the options.

Unfortunately for the retail consumers that actually built their business, it won’t matter at all.

The foundation is a nonprofit Nvidia now. Happy to sell almost entirely in B2B bulk transactions, and let scalpers hoard all consumer/retail stock to gouge consumers with 200%+ markup.

Seriously? This is 2023, we don’t have to pay homage to, or clarify our language regarding implementations and topologies that only a tiny fraction of current users are even aware they exist, and most of those have only read about them in a book, or manual.

They haven’t been. Google’s lawyers moved to restrict trial documents from being made public, and the judge agreed to. Only a handful were briefly available prior to that ruling.

What services are you running? Which of them are critical and need to stay up?

Can you migrate, or setup failovers, to a low powered ARM device? Or one the new Intel N series e.g. N100 low power devices?

If not, you’re going to need to buy/build a fairly large battery bank.

Linus is not declaratively stating it didn’t happen, he’s using PR doublespeak to minimize his legal exposure down the road.
