As a general user I have not really seen many calls for donations / volunteering / help requested, I think more people would be willing to pitch in if tangible needs were presented clearly - but maybe I’m alone in my willingness to help.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Possibility of translating the messages of dogs, cats, and other petsEnglish
7·29 days agoPeople saying dogs don’t communicate as much with sound… Are you a 1 or multiple dog household? Because while dogs communicate lightly with me through sound, my two huskies talk to each other a LOT, and if you watch the behavior and actions surrounding each vocal communication you can tell that something is being transferred, even if it is a really simple message.
Would be curious to know more specifically what they are telling each other.

1·29 days agoI think the christian religion plays a large role, as many christian americans, who dominate our political cycle, see it as their “holy land”.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How should a news article website financially sustain itself?English
1·1 month agoI did not intend to ever say you can have personalized advertisements without invading someone’s privacy, I’m not sure what I wrote that you interpreted that way, possibly my discussion about how I feel the current ads are not always relevant?
Either way, I stated that advertisers should utilize the content of the website or the content being viewed as a method to advertise, which does not involve invasions of privacy.
Or maybe it was when I said “you don’t need to invade someones privacy to advertise to them”
That is me saying, you can have advertisements that are meant for a specific group, and believe that someone is part of that group based on them visiting a website, without invading their privacy.
Its how newspapers did advertisements, its why magazines existed - to sell ad space for specific interest groups. People also give away data by signing up for websites, interest groups, or ordering things, all data that can be harvested without entering my computer or invading my privacy.

2·1 month agoI’m not sure what I said is conflicting, and I feel like your statement is trying to minimize the point I am making, but thats ok, I believe we will never come to agreement here because I firmly disagree with the disruption of privacy for the sake of advertisement.
You can say my feelings are meaningless, but as this gets more invasive people will seek ways to opt out, which I believe is meaningful, although you can say and feel whatever you want my friend :).
Thanks for the book rec, I’ll look it over!

1·1 month agoYeah I understand that, but I will never support trading privacy so advertisers can generate more revenue, so I will continue to propose non-invasive alternatives and tell people supporting invasive methods that they are wrong.

1·1 month agoI mean most of the ads I get are meaningless to me despite being personalized, I feel like a lot of people say the same thing, but maybe I am in the minority here.
Either way, I don’t think you need to invade peoples privacy to advertise to them, but agree to disagree. You’re proposing and supporting a level of capitalism that I find repulsive, profit at all costs, privacy isn’t a cost I want to spend.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do I almost never see people flying drones?English
4·1 month agoNot much to do with them unless you want to photograph something specific, and for photographers/videographers the quality can be a let down unless you spend like 2k+ at least, because you basically are using a flying GoPro (DJIs version, but still not exactly mind blowing photography capabilities there).
funny how the toolbox makes their one whisker look loooooonngggg

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How should a news article website financially sustain itself?English
91·1 month agoMaybe? I think they used to advertise based on the content and expected demographics for the website, which is an alternative method that doesn’t require invasive digital fingering.
wow, seems like I probably heard that story before and internalized without realizing, although I would love to believe I guessed correctly.
Super cool piece of history, its easy to forget often people are just flying by the seat of their pants despite the way history and photographs make it look / feel otherwise.
I don’t think they were doing EVAs or anything, so I don’t really know how impressive the boots need to be, although I am thinking the construction boots / loggers on the middle two are not the regulation ones.
I am picturing them realizing they didn’t bring their boots or they were still being made on picture day, so NASA engineers running around trying to find people who had a pair of boots they were willing to let them spray paint LOL.
Looks like left and right are wearing the actual boots btw

Yeah but the people on their left and right are wearing different boots, that is what I was referring to.

21·1 month agoRight? Like I remember a day and age when the ads were not obtrusive and awful, I would happily go back to a middle ground with normal sidebar/in video ads.

373·1 month agoI mean isn’t there a world where we have unobtrusive adverts that are for products people actually want, and can sustain the reporting?
I think people would use less ad blockers if the ads were not designed / placed in a way that feels almost seizure inducing at times.
Unfortunately I think threads/twitter might be the future as a type of open source reporting, as everytime I hit a pay wall I turn around and leave.
The boot discrepancy is interesting, I wonder if that has to do with fit, mission assignments, rank, role, or personal preference.

pics@lemmy.world•Divers in an underwater welding school. Norway.English
11·1 month agoFalse, it clearly says NYD (New York Diving) on their gear.
To make sure this isn’t entirely a shit comment it looks like their helmet has a flip down welding protection filter maybe? Also, is that yellow thing a dive knife?
I cannot imagine how hard I would shit my ocean if I was out swimming and one of these dudes rolled up on me out of the water, as I have submechanicaphobia and thelassiaphobia, this is such a terrible and good meeting point of the two fears, and is spine tingling-ly creepy in the best way.

cool pic, I can’t quite put my finger on it but the way the colors are graded (or how they were in the moment) evokes a kind of norman rockwell vibe? or “The Suburbs” by Arcade Fire, to me personally.
I enjoyed viewing and thinking about this.
