I want to but I can’t afford a new hard drive to install it onto.

  Copy files to keep to cloud or other machine.
  
  Prep usb drive with favorite OS installer (zorin, pop, mint, bazzite, fedora, nix, etc)
  
  Boot into usb drive and wipe hard drive to put linux on it.
  
  Copy desired files back onto your linux machine
