I’ve been vegan for four years and honestly, while it was practically not difficult for me, there was a pretty big mental hurdle I had to get over. It sounds silly in retrospect, but I literally mourned foods that I thought I’d never be able to eat. Turns out I still eat all the foods I like, just with small adjustments to make them vegan. So glad I switched. Best decision I ever made.

  • I had a girl bring a guy friend along on our first date without giving me a heads up for the same reason. I was like, ok that’s a little weird but whatever. I’m certainly not going to give someone shit for doing something that makes them feel comfortable. Ended up chatting it up with the guy friend who turned out to be super cool.

So me and the girl end up seriously dating after a while and she later tells me that she spent most of our first date trying to subtly get her friend to leave so that she could spend more time with me.

  • I got a different impression from Scrubs. To me it was a show mostly about doctors, and whenever it did talk about the healthcare industry, it was largely critical. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I remember they would frequently criticize the bullshit and red tape in the healthcare industry. I think there’s even an episode in the first season where they commit insurance fraud to save a poor patient.

  • I won’t speak for other vegans, but my research into beekeeping and honey production turned me against the industry for the following reasons:

    • Beekeepers will commonly clip the wings of queens to keep them from swarming or leaving.
    • Semen is commonly extracted from bees by crushing them.
    • Honey taken from hives is commonly replaced with a nutrient-devoid sugar solution, affecting the health of the bees.
    • Selective breeding of honeybees has made them more susceptible to diseases which can also affect native insects.
    • Honeybees have been shown to cause serious disruptions to plant-pollinator networks, putting local pollinators at great risk.
