Maybe I’m off on this but suffering/misery would include pain + the emotional state of unhappiness or we would just use pain for both? Avoiding painful stimuli doesn’t tell me about their emotional state or cognitive awareness of the pain, just an awareness of the stimuli.

How do you measure how much misery a cod feels?

I don’t think you’re completely off the mark but I would think an animal needs at least a nervous system to experience pain, so there are categories to consider and it may be morally virtuous to abstain from eating some animals but not necessarily immoral, and we should be careful to anthropomorphize other animal emotional states.

As a humanist I think we should go with human first before or instead of these potentially divisive, arbitrary age brackets, contemporary generational labels, etc.

I have assumed it was because of traditional shipping channels going through there so pirates and criminals would be waiting to intercept cargo ships in the area. Like highwayman waiting along the road outside of the range of the police of nearby towns or cities. Ships disappear so people make up stories about why.

It’s apparently like driving a car or riding a bike or swinging a hammer, there’s a small learning curve but with a little practice it’s overcome pretty quickly and feels like a natural extension of yourself. But yeah given a preference I’d probably want to try tying it to wrist or hand movements for practicality.
