No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How would society look like with no companies at all and every single thing is free?
51·9 days agoRemember when toilet paper disappeared from store shelves because a respiratory virus was making its way to everyone? Eventually people realized they had toilet paper, the factories kept producing it, and the shelves recovered and we all agreed that was stupid.
Now imagine nobody has a reason/reasonable way to make their own toilet paper, and whatever toilet paper is available is up for grabs.
Now imagine that with pretty much everything else.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the deal with people liking old devices?
12·26 days agoI find a lot more “soul” in older electronics. So many devices today are a minimalist thing with a touchscreen (or worse, thing controlled by your phone), probably designed to force you into a subscription. At least consumerism from a few decades ago operated by innovating to make you want to buy a new product, rather than designing it to be a trap.
Going back to the “soul” bit: I recently bought a Bang and Olufsen Beosystem 2500 (look it up) for my office. It’s a stereo from the very early 90s that cost thousands of dollars in its day. It sounds amazing, and has little touches that just make it cool. Like motorized glass doors that are motion activated, with warm accent lighting when the unit is on. The tape player didn’t work when I bought it, but I was able to replace the belt and now my childhood Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego soundtrack tape is playable again! And with an Aux input, I can also use it for modern stuff too to take advantage of what we’ve gained in media playback since ~1991.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•This chili oil is apparently very Calorie dense
4·1 month agoGrams are a measure of weight (well, mass if you want to be really specific). Tablespoons are a measure of volume. In order to do a proper comparison you need to know density.
Because metric plans things nicely, a gram is one milliliter of water. 4 tbsp is 59.15ml. So… Yeah, pretty damn close to 60, but again that’s when working with water. I would imagine chili flakes are a little less dense and might throw that calculation off a bit.

7·1 month agoAnd 4 tbsp would be triple 4 tsp, or 54 grams. Similar ballpark at least.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do RICH people of color ever get harassed by ICE?
51·1 month agoFor what it’s worth, off duty cops who aren’t white were getting harassed by ICE in the Minneapolis area. Little different than class, but still something.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Avocado. Is it really so untasty or I am doing something wrong?
561·1 month agoAt least in the Americas, you don’t buy avocado for sweetness. It’s basically a replacement for fat (with fats of its own). Think turkey bacon avocado, for example: turkey is a leaner meat, avocado supplements that, and bacon adds flavor and saltiness.
If you must get something sweet out of it, I’ve had good luck mixing it with a sprinkle of sugar, a splash of lime juice, and a little hot sauce if you want to be frisky.

- Where is this “privacy focused” product getting the money for that?
It’s a battle of evolution: we lost our ability to do that, but have a decent reflex to catch ourselves from danger. It’s why I don’t fall off a bed. Even when that bed is a hammock on top of a tree.
Cool! I’m not entirely sure because I know little about it, but you may have actually brought up a valid point! It’s a shame we had to climb a mountain of snark and smartassery to get to that possibility.
Can you wake up?
In Korea they say not to leave a fan running overnight. Why? Because it will blow the oxygen away and you’ll suffocate.
Doesn’t mean it’s true.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How can we convince Trump voters to NOT vote for Trump (or Vance) in the 2026 midterms and the 2028 election?
4·3 months agoHistorically, yes. But that general idea has really been flipped over the last decade. 2018 midterm flipped the house D. 2022 gave Republicans control of the house, but not nearly as badly as expected and even gave an extra D seat in the Senate. There have been countless special elections (same idea, usually even harder than a midterm for Democrats) where they pulled through, giving Georgia and even (briefly) Alabama Democratic senators.

4·3 months agoThat’s the same initials of mine! I did a PEI bed sheet though, and so far I’ve stuck with Cura (but you’re tempting me!)
Is it the greatest? Of course not. Does it take care of a lot of issue I had with my previous Ender 3 V2? Definitely.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How can we convince Trump voters to NOT vote for Trump (or Vance) in the 2026 midterms and the 2028 election?
53·3 months agoSo, I’ll argue with people on Nextdoor about things like ICE and trans issues when they come up. Over the last few weeks I’ve been talking directly with a woman from there, after a discussion about ICE. She identifies as conservative/libertarian, but to be fair she also voted for the incumbent Democrat in our congressional district so there legitimately was some wiggle room there, not just a MAGA claiming to be moderate.
Over the long course of our conversation, she seems to see the anti-Trump point of view a lot better and even changed her mind a little bit on some topics. I also accidentally triggered what I can best describe as an introspective crisis when I explained that I’m not entirely comfortable considering her a friend when she turns a blind eye to the harm Trump is causing others, including the diverse group of friends I have (it was a more detailed, gentle explanation but that was the gist of it)
Since this is ongoing and I’ve been kind of surprised at how it’s gone, here’s what I think has worked well…
-
Keep things friendly. I know that’s hard to do, but if you come on too strong and angry, you’ll just drive people away from you and firmer in their position
-
Stay on-topic to the things that matter most. Things like people being sent to CECOT without so much as a trial (disregarding multiple amendments in the bill of rights)
-
Stay factual. Be prepared to back up with sources, and offer to ahead of time. Be absolutely sure that everything you say is bulletproofly true. Avoid getting alarmist.
-
Pace yourself. I’d go hours just thinking about what was said and how best to respond. We agreed this was best so we didn’t get distracted from our lives too much
-
Listen. I can’t think of anything where I’ve really changed my mind, but it does give a way to frame your concerns (“I hear what you’re saying about the influx of migrants. I’m not sure what the data shows there, but if you let the government bypass protocol they’re basically incentivized to let the mess get so big they can take away rights and that doesn’t sit well with me” or “I get that you want people to go through the legal process, but ICE is picking up people in court on their way to their check-ins. They’re TRYING to keep things legal and are getting punished for it”). Sometimes I’ve circled back to things said earlier to make a connection (don’t like CECOT happening? This is the kind of thing that got us there)

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If people started tagging trump in all their socials, like every post, would that be a bad thing?
9·3 months agoAssuming you mean metaphorically, I’m pretty sure people/organizations that much in the spotlight already get plenty of tags and the platforms limit notifications
I think it’s related to the age of the hens, more common with the younger ones. Chances are there are others in the flock that are the same age, so that would make sense.
