  • Yeah I’m not too upset with Paradox’s strategy here. I am of mixed feelings about it though.

It makes it next to impossible to get into as a new player, because you go to the store page and see that the game costs $250 for all content. But each of those content drops were spaced out, well executed, and usually come with major changes to the base game formula to accommodate them. For someone who has been playing the game for 10 years, each DLC is exciting and fresh, and costs about $20 for another 8 months of new enjoyment in your favorite game.

But anyone looking at it as a new player is going to see the bulk cost of the game and, rightfully so I think, decide “nah, fuck that”.

Rimworld also comes to mind here. Rimworld has like 8 DLC packs that collectively add more content to the game than the game even started with. I don’t own most of them because I don’t play Rimworld all that often. But for someone who does play it often, they’re genuinely good expansions.

I’d love to see more games like Terraria, which gets sold for $5 on the regular and has had over a decade of love-labor free updates that fundamentally change the way the game works, but I understand how that may not be financially responsible for larger studios. For bigger projects I’m not that mad at paying $20 twice a year for quality expansions, so long as they are in fact quality.

  • Linux noob here, I’ve been running Mint for about a year and constantly bitching about my Nvidia card’s performance vs. Windows. I have the most updated closed source drivers installed, but cooking shaders on games still takes a half hour and many games run like trash even after precompiling said shaders. Space Marine 2 comes to mind, runs like butter on my Win10 partition but is basically unplayable on Linux.

Am I hearing that I just need to switch to Bazzite and this problem disappears?? Because on God I will do that literally tonight if that’s true. I had been holding out for a new batch of Nvidia proprietary drivers to hit the scene or else just resigning myself to having to buy an AMD card.

I’d expect that Bazzite and Mint would use the same Nvidia proprietary drivers without much noticeable change in performance, but to be honest I don’t know jack about shit about their back end behind the scenes processes so I could be wildly off base.

  • You run into a subtext problem here though.

Serving shareholders’ “best interests” is not the same thing as either maximizing profits

Making this argument to shareholders means you’re telling them “I wish to shrink your profits”, no matter what else comes after that comma that’s a non-starter for an American CEO. 99% of shareholders don’t give one Kentucky fried fuck about the company, they just want free money. You get between them and their free money and you’re gone, replaced by the next failing-upward ghoul in line on LinkedIn.

The idea of having a well established, respected and non-abusive company is no longer a reality in America. The stock market is a vehicle for gambling on shareholder feelings. It’s no longer about the company at all, just about how much you can hype up the company to then pass the bag along to someone else.

Wal-Mart shareholders don’t care if Wal-Mart craters into Hell tomorrow, so long as they get paid dividends and are able to offload their shares at a profit before it dies.
