  • China has been militarizing and between the gender gap, the soon decline in population, and recent global attitudes towards them shifting , theyre going to be in for a world of economic hurt. A large population of unattached young men with poor economic outcomes doesnt bode well for peace in that region.

Likewise the US policy of “surely embracing capitalism will lead to a liberal democracy” gave way to mild hostility towards china when it didnt happen. Especially with a president for 4 years who kept saying those quiet things other presidents didnt outright say because they knew it would be poking the bear for no reason.

God help us all if this actually happens because it would lead to a world war centered on Asia and china, and I hope that what will happen with the age gap and decline in china will mirror more japan, but we do live in uncertain times.

  • Yeah I think people forget that these kinds of complaints and memes arent geared at the nice old lady who rents the unit upstairs and who, along with her husband, in the 60s/70s invested in some cheap real estate to help get them through retirement.

This is more he big boys and girls who have eviction down to a science, who dont repair things on time, who are hard to get a hold of, and who raise rent on the regular because despite their overhead remaining the same “everyone else is doing it so good luck!”

The irony is that a lot of the “pro landlord” development and laws favor the big wealthy LLCs and very rich individuals over the mom and pops supplementing their fixed incomes.

  • I dont really use windows often outside of my work devices these days, but even if I did I wouldnt use edge as a primary browser based on how things rolled with IE6 and active X.

Yeah yeah youre a new friendlier Microsoft, webstandards and html5 are more locked in, and your browser is a chrome fork, and you “<3 Linux”. I remember what you are and how you locked down the web when you had a chance. Personally I dont use chrome for the same reason given the direction google has been heading.

But to answer “why not Edge?”: because you spent the better part of the last few decades sucking and amoral companies dont deserve the benefit of good faith.

  • A lot of moderated instances with vague rules like that have quite a bit of nuance. The mods usually arent jerks looking to ban everyone who doesnt agree with them, and if they are then they did you a favor good riddance. One of the issues with the classic “but mah free speech” sea lioning that occurs on reddit is it makes it hard to actually keep things moderated and civil. People get outraged and start going “the rule says that Im not allowed to be an asshole, but I was specifically being a asshat and I think if you really wanted no asshats you should make a rule about it”

Which does lead to granular rules that actually do remove nuance and discretion from enforcement.

  • The idea behind it per the video where they introduced it is that its a means of creators to take ownership of their own content. The idea being that if you follow creator X on youtube you arent actually following creator x you’re following them on youtube. If something happens or youtube removes a video for whatever reason of they have to leave the platform then you lose access to their content.

If you’re on this app you follow creator x on whatever platform they are on. So in theory it’s not just an all in one app but a way to solve the youtube monopoly and make for an easy transition.

In concept I think it sounds really cool, but whether it actually is able to deliver on it’s goals remains to be seen.

Lol yes it’s one of the largest websites on the internet. Hundreds of millions of unique users browse it a month and due to the fact that anyone can upload to it the site is LOADED with unique, insightful, creative, and informative content.

If you cant find good content on youtube it’s probably more a you problem.

Understandably a few bucks for the hours of content I stream is justifiable, and if it were some other service I might, Im thinking on getting nebula, but google can go to hell. If they didnt want the burden of youtube they could have not bought it out, and not beat out the competition until they were the only game in town. Likewise Im salty that simple background and multitasking features are locked behind a paywall on a phone.

On top of that even the successful creators are kept afloat more by patreon and sponsor reads than they are youtubes ad services, and the algorithm and content blocker and lack of human support for creators means they regularly get screwed with age restrictions and copyright takedowns.

Im normally pretty understanding about companies needing to make a buck and be profitable and needing ads(though internet ads are non curated random scammy garbage) but I will continue to leech off of youtube until they finally block it.

  • Thats a tricky one if they dont like the texture its hard to say. You can maybe make a dish with a less firm tofu thats softer if thats something she’s ok? Maybe do a ma po tofu with rice or something vaguely related.

Have you tried the classic of crispy tofu blocks? Just cube the tofu, toss in cornstarch and fry until the outside is good and crispy. Serve with rice and some kind of sauce or even eat it alone dusted with salt and pepper.

  • I think it is also a reason why a lot of vegetarian food options or certain ingredients like tofu in the US are seen as lesser.

Like this isnt a meatless example but how tofu is presented in the west is a good showcase of this disconnect. There are people who dont care for tofu because tofu has been presented to them as a meat fill in. Tofurkey instead of turkey, tofu dog instead of hot dog, tofu nuggest, and etc. And tofu is not meat. It’s tofu. So yeah when you replace a Turkey dinner with tofu and are told its just as good or good enough you start associating it as an inferior tasting meat substitute.

But tofu isnt a meat fill in and in fact many traditional recipes use it in conjunction with meat. Tofu is tofu. It is its own ingredient and recipe, and if you use it as such instead of trying to pretend it’s something else you can do good things.

Like the same goes for a lot of western vegetarian dishes. Instead of leaning into the flavor profile of the dish or digging up some old traditional meatless recipe(of which many exist even western dishes when you consider lent and meatless fridays were a thing traditionally). And dont get me wrong I understand that someone who went vegetarian or vegan may want to emulate a spicy chicken wing, or a burger, but it feels like a lot of the mainstream western options are all just drop in replacements.
