I fully understand the argument and kinda agree. That said, here’s why i still use the Telegram self-chat just like OP, you can suggest a note-taking app replacement if you think:

• Paste a link, instant preview of it without user intervention, can play it right on the app if it’s audio/video if i want or get a preview of it if it’s just a page without opening a full browser (this puts it automatically above a “synced notepad” which is what i understand note taking apps tend to be)
• Synced across devices
• Both desktop and mobile
• Private, no one else sees it
• Easy and convenient, i usually have Telegram running already, just switch to it on browser or desktop and copy or paste the thing

Gimme a note taking app that has all these, that is not a big program needing lots of resources to run all the time, and that i can self-host for the server part (or E2EE P2P like Syncthing) and we’re cooking!

Since i use the self-chat on Telegram a lot i’ve wished for exactly the same thing in the past as i’m planning on leaving the service, so far haven’t found a right fit yet

I hate that this happens, because he’s a goddamned prophet when it comes to software freedom, the harms of proprietary dev models and related stuff, he’s also in mastodon and regularly posts about international news i see no one else mention, but damn there’s just no coming back from all this shit, how the hell would you share stuff he has said with all this gross stuff staining him? That’s one of the problems of a global communication network. There was a quote i read some years ago (which i wish i could find again) that more or less said that people with some talent who in the past would have been the pride of their village now compete with world class in that skill and now are seen as “average”, yet in reality they’re talented, is just that the bar has been unfairly raised to “Beat the best in the world”.

That doesn’t seem to be FOSS, i see no code, at a glance it looks like another closed, VC-backed commercial platform unless i missed something

No matter how many constraints you add, it’s never enough, that’s the weakness of a model that only knows language and nothing else

So, let me see if i understand the argument: Discord, a piece of closed source software which is very popular at the moment because they hit first (user inertia) and haven’t yet ramped up the enshittification (but sooner or later will because they already announced the intention to go the IPO route), wins over free software alternatives because of a 100% unofficial bot designed to help with one tiny niche user case most users of the platform haven’t even heard about, which is itself free software and therefore could be migrated and/or adapted to other free software?
