Technology@lemmy.ml•Join Tech Workers Coalition and help unionize tech workers - Onboarding Call Oct 29
5·7 months agoBecause the infrastructure group is concerned with more critical work around self-hosting than video calls. If you want to sponsor a jitsi server and do the plumbing work of replacing all our technical and organizational dependencies on zoom with Jit.si, feel free to join and expand our self-hosted infrastructure.

Technology@lemmy.ml•How AI and Wikipedia have sent vulnerable languages into a doom spiral
16·7 months agoIf you build the infrastructure for a certain thing to happen, you’re responsible for the thing. For the same reason we hold facebook accountable for the rise of the far-right, we should hold WikiPedia accountable for this stuff. Infrastructure is never neutral.

4·9 months agoI didn’t mention some other systems, but for bigger campaigns ActionNetwork is one of the most used tools and has a lot of integrations, for instance with N8N. I do run some systems with ActionNetwork, mostly for newsletters. The thing of using N8N as a glue layer is that you can integrate with more specialized tools if the need arises, maintaining your custom systems for more niche cases.

Technology@lemmy.ml•TikTokers are calling LA ICE raids 'music festivals' to trick the algorithm
4·9 months agoI don’t use mastodon exactly because I don’t want to put in the labor of figuring out what content to consume. I want to be in control of the logic, but the machine should be doing it. The fediverse fails because it thinks people who want control over their feed are fine with not putting in any labor at all, basically conceding to big platforms that the only way to customize a feed is in an exploitative, invasive way, which is obviously bullshit.

12·9 months agothe fediverse is microscopic and the people you want to get involved politically probably stay away from it.

37·9 months agobecause there are no viable alternatives for large outreach.
No, it’s global. There are two timeslots to better accommodate the broadest possible crowd. TWC is mostly active in the USA and Europe atm, because the Indian chapter basically merged with the local IT union and stopped operating as TWC.
The event is organized by the TWC Global chapter, which is the “digital” chapter that supports the local chapters throughout the world.

2·2 years agoare you familiar with left-wing blockchain and that whole strand of research or you just talk because you have no clue about the fact that there’s always been plenty of anti-capitalist and post-capitalist in the blockchain scene?

Technology@lemmy.ml•Tech Workers Coalition: Adapting the Labor Movement for the Digital Age - The Blockchain Socialist
2·2 years agoThere’s a lot of lefitsts spaces in the blockchain. While they are minoritarian, they have a distinct political agenda and set of values, separate from most of the web3 world. They either envision the usage of blockchain for local economies (an evolution of circular economy and local currencies that were popular in the 90’s and 2000s), or more global scale realignment of incentives, either through socialist market economies or more planning-oriented solutions.

There are entire fields of research on that. Or do you believe the internet, a technology developed for military purposes, an infrastructure that supports most of the economy, the medium through billions of people experience most of reality and build connections, is free from ideology and propaganda?
This paper explain a taxonomy of harms created by LLMs: https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3531146.3533088
OpenAI released ChatGPT without systems to prevent or compensate these harms and being fully aware of the consequences, since this kind of research has been going on for several years. In the meanwhile they’ve put some paper-thin countermeasures on some of these problems but they are still pretty much a shit-show in terms of accountability. Most likely they will get sued into oblivion before regulators outlaw LLMs with dialogical interfaces. This won’t do much for the harm that open-source LLMs will create but at least will limit large-scale harm to the general population.

offer people what AI cannot offer: relationships, fun, belonging, relief. If your political organizing is less enjoyable than talking to a chatbot, people will stick to the chatbot.
