  • They’re not hard to use, they’re hard to use well. And really, not that hard. I’m a pretty good shot, and I’d say I spent much less time learning to shoot than I did, say, computer-related skills which took way more practice, and study.

It’s a blessing that most mass shooters are not skilled shooters. The shooters that are skilled tend to favour the rifle. They make each shot count, and typically only fire once. But, that’s more of an assassination. People using handguns tend to miss a lot — I think they’re really going for terror/fear and not a high casualty count.

The “problem” with being a good shooter is, you have certain safety tenets drilled into your head. Know where each shot is going to go, because you’re responsible for the bullet once it’s fired, and you can’t get it back; don’t point at anything you don’t intend to destroy/don’t have the right to destroy/don’t have the legal right to destroy; shoot to kill, never to warn or maim; don’t shoot if you can’t be sure you will hit your target; etc. Specifically because I think it begs the question, about warning shots: they’re dumb. The idea of shooting up to warn people. That bullet will eventually come down, at terminal velocity, and if it hits someone, it will do serious damage. If it hits the head just right, that warning shot absolutely can kill a bystander.

  • I think they’re mad. Charlie Kirk was their man, and he was so young, who knows what he could have been. Like, Trump is what, pushing 80? Plus he’s a felon, everyone knows he’s in the Epstein files… he is on his way out, in more ways than one. Kirk is a little cleaner. So all their hopes and dreams of keeping the coloured man down, keeping the “alphabet mafia” as Kirk called the LGBTQ+ community, down, were pinned on this guy, or at least a lot of those hopes, so yeah, they’re pretty pissed.

Thing is, they weren’t gonna let up on people of colour or people of different sexual identities/orientations anyway. And all signs show they were ramping up the violence against minorities. So yeah, they’re mad, but when they say things like “now it’s war” it’s hard to know what they mean since they were waging war before.

It’s like an abusive situation and a lot of these people are probably domestic abusers and come from that mindset. Like they were already going to do damage, but now that you’ve struck back? Oh, now you’re really in trouble. But you were never not in trouble because the problem isn’t you, it’s them. They were always gonna be that way. We have to figure out how to get our country out from under this bullshit.

  • They don’t. They play the victim a lot more ways than that.

For example: you don’t go to church. They think “Christian values are under attack.” You argue for civil rights. “The right of the White Man is under attack.” Shit like that. And they will call you a fascist, a socialist, a communist, everything but what you are, which is a nonconformist, for not doing exactly what they want you to do.

A conservative, by the simplest definition, is one who opposes change for the sake of change. The ideal of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” The problem is, while the system may not be broken for them (WASP), it needs work for people of colour, the LGBTQ+, Palestinians, and more. But they don’t want a world that works for the rest of us. They just want to maintain the status quo. A lot of them have much more complicated feelings and opinions than that, but that’s basically conservatism in a nutshell. Not extreme. Unfortunately very few conservatives are basic conservatives anymore.

  • As an older guy who struggles with slang… I’ve seen it used by guys and gals alike, but sometimes it seems to be the girl equivalent of wanker.

Worth noting that wanker is predominantly a British phrase that refers to a masturbatory act but generally refers to a person who lacks certain social graces. Like a jerk. I like saying aho in Japanese — same thing. But wanker has a class all its own, along with most British slang. You get it or you don’t.

My current understanding of the term gooner is that it means “porn addict” of any sex, gender, identification, or orientation. And while gooning does seem to refer to the masturbatory act, it seems to specify while porn is being watched or otherwise consumed.

  • Reddit will tell you why you were banned. It generates a PM with the reason and a link to the offending post.

For example, I was banned for inciting violence towards a protected group of people… in reference to saying child predators should face stiffer legal penalties. Someone took it the wrong (or maybe right) way because their president is in the Epstein files. Honestly I wasn’t even thinking of him but if the prison jumpsuit fits… anyway, it was not a mystery to me.

I did appeal in case AI flagged me but a human upheld it.

But as to why Lemmy is better in that regard… more open platform trying to improve upon the formula of those that came before. Also run by people not corporations. And not operated by the GOP.

  • Because people who kill generally don’t get released. Murder one or “Murder in the first degree” means premeditated and typically carries life/death sentences. Murder two is more like heat of the moment, you come home and find your wife in bed with another man… those carry sentences of a decade or more. Below that you’re in manslaughter territory which is more like accident/extenuating circumstances and those people get years too.

Child predators get time, too, but they never get rehabilitated because there’s no cure for it. They’re always going to want to ruin some child’s life, and they’re going to want to do it a lot, to ruin several kids’ lives. So there’s a registry for them, and they can’t live near schools, churches (ironically), day care centers, and such.

As for those asking what the term means, please do the community a favor and downvote people giving wrong answers trying to be funny. Chomo is street slang for child molester, and the word is derived from “homo.” So the word “homo” makes sense, it’s just short for homosexual. Put a C on it and the first sound is “Ch” like child. So it’s someone who targets children. Never thought I’d see the term up here though. Guess Lemmy is getting popular.

  • I’m not religious, but it seems like a fair deal. The phone companies like to install their antennae on tall towers, they usually make them or have them made by contractors, I suppose. Having them affixed to an existing structure just makes sense. It doesn’t particularly matter that it’s a church, except the phone companies whose networks are served by those antennae (which I admit I can’t see in the photo) would be paying the owner of the building/land, and we left-leaning folks generally don’t like money flowing into churches and whatnot, but it still makes good business sense. Tall buildings come with costs, and if those can be mitigated by leasing the height to cell phone companies, I don’t see a problem. It’s not like the church is censoring (or even monitoring) cellular communications routed through those antennae. Most likely they don’t even have access to the data.

  • You ever see a dump truck that says “not responsible for broken windshields”? Guess what. EVERY truck — this is US law anyway — is responsible for securing its load. So why do they have the sticker? So you don’t bug them about it. Or at least so most people don’t bug them about it. They also say stay back 200 feet. That’s not a law. It’s just a bumper sticker and is equally as enforceable. If they crack your windshield because they didn’t secure your load, you (or rather your insurance company) can go after them. But the truth is, most insurance companies just write off so many broken windshields per however long anyway, they won’t go after the company even if you have proof. But they could — and so could you.

Post the review anyway. Or at the very least post a review that says “the terms say I can’t post a negative review so believe me when I say the service was acceptable.” It’s not a negative review. It’s not a positive review either. It’s a neutral review and it calls out the clause. It is heavily implied to be opposite of what you said. You said the work was acceptable, implying it’s unacceptable. If you used the same tactic and said the work was great, the opposite would appear true, that it was not great. But acceptable is not great. So say it was acceptable and imply you were forced to say that. Thusly, an intelligent person will see your message for what it is.

  • That is so weird, I was just reading about them earlier today. I really only cared about one or two songs off their first album, but Apple Music recommended the 25th anniversary EP, it’s like 4 songs on that album that are getting remade or something. Apparently they’ve gone through some lineup changes, it’s still the two sisters singing and writing though, and their latest album of new material was last year.

Too heavy for me but I’ll listen to “Brackish XXV.” I might listen more than once. I mean, the novelty in 1999/2000 was, here’s these 12-13 year old girls (I think one was 14?) and they make metal. And it’s not even cute, they’re serious about it and they’re punching above their weight class. Not by much but they did alright and enjoyed moderate success. I guess it’s still a novelty if their lineup is all female and they’re writing their own stuff, that still makes them somewhat unique in the industry, but still not really my thing.
