New Communities@lemmy.world•Disengage, Disconnect, Block, FilterEnglish
7·6 months agoBlue Sky lets you kind of subscribe to a block list. Someone can make a list of accounts and post it publicly and you can block that entire list. There are lists for all sorts of topics, like spammers or neo- Nazis or trolls or AI generated profiles.

Technology@lemmy.ml•This Group Pays Bounties to Repair Broken Devices—Even If the Fix Breaks the LawEnglish
32·6 months agoThis is badass. I love hearing about this. And what a smart model, let people with the devices contribute to the bounty and things that have a lot of demand and will help a lot of people have bigger bounties.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Crows are intelligent birds and learn quickly – even from each other. In Sweden, they are used to collect cigarette butts and bring them to a machine that automatically rewards them with peanuts.English
7·6 months agoWhy don’t we just train the crows to peck out the eyes of people that throw cigarette butts on the ground in the first place?

5·8 months agoYeah, it’s actually really valuable data for your own personal use in aggregate. Obviously you would notice a dramatic change one day. But you wouldn’t notice a slow trending change. Having the data to see that could help you identify a condition early before you have symptoms.
Collecting the data has a lot of value. Paying a subscription service for the rest of your life to not lose the data kind of ruins the deal.

3·8 months agoI was so excited about Shelly when I first discovered it. Ordered a ton of stuff and started swapping over. The reliability was awful. I have a giant box of them that I don’t know what to do with.

homeassistant@lemmy.world•Whats everyone using for smart plugs?English
3·8 months agoI really liked their stuff, but things have been out of stock lately. Their lightbulbs only lasted a year and they stopped selling them. I’m concerned they are having supply chain issues.

homeassistant@lemmy.world•Whats everyone using for smart plugs?English
4·8 months agoStill using Insteon. Nothing else is as reliable. Works even if the Wi-Fi router is down. Their hub talks to Home Assistant and that integration has been rock solid. Under the new owners, the hardware is better than ever. But I have 18 year-old light switches and plug-in modules still working flawlessly even after moving them to three different houses.

16·8 months agoXP really was the peak. It was so easy to wipe a machine and install XP and all the drivers and hardware just worked. I was a helpdesk tech during this era and once I had all the machines on XP I had a lot more free time to fight a battle of wits with the HP LaserJets.

0·9 months agoWhat sort of bugs are you experiencing? I’m using the official Jellyfin app and it’s been extremely stable on all my Apple devices. But I noticed a while ago that videos that were not MPEG were problematic so I converted all the AVI and WMV and WEBM to MP4 and it has been much more reliable. Scrubbing and previews have worked much better also

1·10 months agoI would be the most concerned about the music. The MPAA exists solely to sue consumers and seems to have no other real purpose. Probably best to scrub the soundtracks.

It’s a pretty normal model. You offer a free version to help make your product popular. People will use it at home and then at work they will gravitate to the thing they are familiar with. Small companies will start on the free version and eventually upgrade.
