They saw her amping up the progressives and needed to put a stop to it and whether it was her idea or not she jumped in there with all her energy.

People from outside city centers need tonaccept the fact that their low-density neighbourhoods are not nearly as valuable as the mid- or high-density neighbourhoods of cities and also it’s not the people in the cities’ jobs to bulldoze their own shit to let a few people drive their stupid cars through it like they own the place. You grossly over-estimate the value of “visitors” and under-estimate the value of make cities accessible to the people who actually live there.

Also, pedestrian streets, when it comes to smaller purchase stores(no couches or fridges), are overwhelmingly better for businesses but the owners refuse to believe it because they’re scared. Even then, I went to one appliance store partly because I could take the metro there and didn’t need to drive and then just got the fucking thing delivered for free. Never had to involve my car once, which is good because it’s not big enough for a washing machine anyway so I’d have needed to rent a U-Haul anyway.

What I’m saying is: I hope your city makes the right choice in the end and ignores the stupid people in favour of being objectively correct.

It’s to show that there is literacy and understanding of nuance there, but that at the end of the day it’s more of a “fun fact” when the centrists keep supporting the conservatives as their general default. Even when Liberals do nothing is about how that nothing is consistently helping the far-right get away with shit while aggressively discouraging progressive change.

Conservatives are nationalist morons who are trying to conserve and bring back a lot of the systems that let low-quality privileged people in their given society keep all the power. Liberals don’t have hating minorites as a policy goal but they also refuse to believe that doing nothing will not, in fact, make up for hundreds of years of systemic issues. Conservatives will try to fix capitalism by ethnic minorities and Liberals will try to fix by getting rid of rules which “might stifle economic expansion”. Neither of those ideologies are worth anything though they are different.

Renting is important to have available but it absolutely does not need to be at the level its at. The amount of people paying for someone else’s investment while wishing they could own something of their own is crazy and it’s insane that we’ve normalized that. And all the while they’re just hoping nothing goes wrong because it seems like even the “good” landlords are hit-or-miss when it comes to getting them to do literally anything. Mine’s usually pretty good but right now there’s a fucking hole in the foundation and getting them to properly address it is a hurdle I shouldn’t have to go through. In order for these buildings to be profitable the tenants need to not only pay for those issues you mentioned but now they’re also paying for someone else’s salary AND in the end that person gets to sell the building and keep all that money, too.

The reason the housing market is fucked in the US and Canada is becauss there are very few rent controls and a lot of the power sides with the landlords. In Montréal you have to be worried about going taking them to court because future landlords can just look up if you’ve ever done anything and deny you a place to live even if the problem was your current landlord is dogshit. Oh, and there’s a new law that’s around landlords being able to use necessary renovations as excuses to raise your rent! They have all the power and it doesn’t matter if they’re big or small, it’s a “business” that attracts the kind of people who don’t mind making easy money off of making you pay for their stuff.

Your landlord(probably) isn’t going to let you hit it because you’re glazing them on Lemmy. Stand up for yourself and others, even if you got lucky with a landlord who is considered good because they don’t throw a hissy fit when you ask them to do their fucking job.
