You spent all those years down in the trenches implementing bullshit designs an architect came up with, positive you could do better if you just got the chance. Then you go to graduate school to get the qualifications companies say you need to be an architect. You receive a masters degree. You’re your companies leading expert on software design. You get promoted to architect.

That’s when you find out the truth. All those previous architects left for the same reason you someday will. It wasn’t the previous architects making the terrible decisions that frustrated you. It was the marketing team and the CEO telling the CTO that the software product must have certain buzzwords present in the design. Those buzzwords offer no value to what your software product is meant to accomplish. But if you don’t put them in the designs, they’ll fire you and hire someone who will play their games.

Eventually, you can’t take it anymore. Having interfaced with the upper levels of your company, and having the understanding of systems engineering you do, you realize that every software firm will be this. There is nowhere you can go that will be better. You start saving.

Your goal is to save enough money to purchase a small plot of land and put an organic farm on it. Your convictions for this farm are simple: it must be able to feed your family. This may not be exclusively what you envision for it, and you may not even intend for it to be the only source of food for your family, but it will help you be less reliant on the kinds of corporation you’ve come to know and come to see as irrevocably evil.

And then sometimes, you get people like this in the post. Who find enough success farming to focus their energy on it exclusively.

Ever since college I’ve always worn a cheap watch on my wrist least for the same reason my grandpa stopped keeping a pocket watch: its more convenient to check on your wrist for the time than your pocket.

Granted we’re getting way off topic here since except for a few years its ways been a digital watch. Asserting analog watches are more numerous in models when digital watches are more numerous in sales, therefore reading an analog clock is a useful skill is odd to me. When I was wearing an analog watch for my allergies it was a flieger because the mental tax of making the hands turn into a singular time was a frustration.

I learned, though, from this that how you present time changes how you perceive time. Kids who grow up with digital representations of time consider “the current moment” in a much narrower and instantaneous scope than people who grew up thinking of time as being a spectrum on a dial

Like for sure. An astronaut has more assistance with this from the ground crew than any of the rest of us. For sure. I’m just speaking from my experience that 1 good knife sharpener is the very best dollar to performance ratio purchase you will ever make and the work sharp bench stone is priced low enough to be, potentially, both the first and last knife sharpener someone ever buys. And man… some shitty walmart knives are just the things to learn how to use it with. They’re made of enough real steel that they won’t flex like the crap you get at the grocery store, but they’re also crappy enough that they won’t retain an edge for very long and you’ll get some practice in with them. And a set of walmart knives is about $30 meaning if someone is rebuying walmart kitchen knives once a year, after 3 years they will have saved money (and material waste), not to mention some sickos out there are going to enjoy it. I don’t enjoy sharpening knives, but I know of people who do actually get satisfaction from it.

But yes. If it’s between buying bad knives every year, or buying bad knives and a bad sharpener and getting by for 2 years, the bad knives and the bad sharpener WILL save you money.

Hiring a dogsitter, making sure the house is maintained and tidy, everything. Think about the difference between going on a 1 week vacation and taking an entire year to go hike a triple crown trail.
