When people make a joke about a name in a different language than theirs, based on not being able to pronounce it correctly, is it just stupidity, or stupidity AND racism?
(i guess answer depends on whether or not the different language is spoken by a minority in the space stupid people make that joke?)
Retrospectively, wasn’t a lot of the space-exploration-based SciFi from the 50s 60s 70s serving the purpose of justifying massive government spendings in big rockets, mainly used to build ICBMs, to justify imperialist policies and the cold war?
were we (the scifi afficionados) the useful idiots of this missile race?
… er… the only thing stopping an AmericaBad-with-a-gun is an AmericaGood-with-a-gun…?
I agree with the geneal idea that one could do even more than what the GPL does, but i think it does a lot already.
On the case of Android, i think Google doesn’t care too much about the kernel code itself, wouldn’t mind contributing back to it if they had to, as the entire ecosystem of software around the kernel is what they use to capture users and keep control of their devices… GGL doesnt need the kernel for that, and the linux kernel is a smol drop of code in the ocean of a prison that is android…
See how Google is adverse to the use of the AGPL in their own products https://drewdevault.com/2020/07/27/Anti-AGPL-propaganda.html this would in practice force them to reveal to their users how they process their data, and would probably scare them to death…
So I am not a proponent of copyright, but it seems that GPL and AGPL are pretty effective tools at discouraging corporations in some cases (not perfect though)

(and: How can things get improved, how can people help?)
discrimination doesnt start with “suggesting bad things about a group of people”, it starts by creating such a group of people, and enforcing it, culturally, politically, socially and at every level (including by jokes, memes, etc.). then at some point in history when society will be tense enough and on the verge of collapse, there will always be someone to suggest that this virtual “group of people” is the cause of… you know… everything bad.
but discrimination starts way way earlier. when making “groups of people” based on things they didn’t chose, and that actually shouldn’t matter so much…
I understand your point of view… I hear that your intention wasnt to provoke or to encourage hatred.
Yet, the very notion that there would be “races” here is err… a very definition of “racism” (ie. who sees things according to supposed “races”)… there is one race, the Human kind… the rest is physical differences.
So somehow, inevitably, making jokes based on these physical differences, on sorting people (even jokingly) according to them (especially implying that there would be a “good” configuration for the, and another that would remind a state that everyone has experience, the last step of a cube where “omg omg i am almost there!!!” feeling so good as something that inevitably needs fixing…) is further re-inforcing discriminatory mechanisms.
Imagine that you would see an image that would make you say “there are 4 skinnies and 4 fatties on that (virtual) picture” -> if your conception of the world, if your way of looking at things is to see “skinnies” on one side, and “fatties” on the other, if you call them that and sort them according to that, well it’s a discrimination based on physicail aspects… isn’t it?
whether it bears a name (“fatism”?) or not doesnt matter so much as how it is a way of looking at people and at the world, that in turns can bring about further simplifications, de-humanization (if someone is “a fatty” or “a xxxx” they often are less than just “a person”), discriminations, and as history showed, often violence…
Does it make any sense to you?
thanks :)
can I just ask this: do you see or not a racist undertone to this image? (i am not trying to entrap or judge your or anything, it’s just curiosity)
I am glad to be part of such a cool anti-racist bunch! :)
well maybe people don’t like racist crap?
go figure…
hmm no big deal, but either i expressed myself wrong, or you are mis-informed about pickling :)
there are several pickling techniques, the most common is lacto-fermentation and:
1/ it doesnt require any boiling. you could be boiling your jars to disinfect them, but thorough wash with soap and/or vinegar is more than enough. so no “cooked food”, no license, thanks.
2/ the labour is barely more than any other preparation of that food. actually much less, as no cooking is involved. cut the goods (sometimes even by hands with cauliflowers, no knife is needed for most of the job), immerse them in salt water and that’s it. it scales very well.
3/ the cost of the jars can be minimum, by recycling existing ones, and/or investing in 10, 20, 50L crocs that can be used hundreds of time. their cost is thus divided by the number of fermentation cycling…
4/ like for previous point, this is assuming that the people confronted with that question are not here at their first rodeo, and that they may face that problem again, so it’s more like an investment.
5/ with a little experience of fermentation, you see and smell immediately if something went bad (mold), and discard those batches. the other do look and smell good and there is no way anyone gets sick. it has worked like this for centuries, way before fridges or the notion of microbiome were invented… I also imagine that people getting food for free have an expectation to use at their own risk, no guarantee, etc… but maybe everyone sues everyone in 'murica, i dunno?
6/ for the taste of pickled cauliflower… well it seems you may never have tried it? like with anything lacto-fermented it is deliciously complex, sour, and goes with everything as a condiment, minced and mixed with other things, or lightly cooked like sauerkraut… it brings vitamins and probiotics that the body craves for, and usually rather tastes “woaa” or “hmmm” than anything else… even if you dont like cauliflower in the first place… do you think the “destitute” want rotten raw cauliflower, or no cauliflower at all, more than the pickled one?
7/ pickling/lacto-fermenting is a practice of autonomy. the labour could be contributed by the people themselves who will benefit from it, who will thus learn a very simple and accessible technique that will enable everyone in the future to conserve food ie. deal with stocks in excess, when they are cheap, abundant, etc. and save them in ways that benefit the body for times when they are not. seems pretty compatible with the objective of anyone collecting and re-distributing unused food!
