  • The amount is incredibly vaste. If we go by quantity no one here is getting a dime, and if we go by quality…it’s probably the same. Not to mention the logistics of getting everyone their penny or two.

And the data right now belongs to everyone. For example, Reddit technically ‘owns’ it’s content, but anyone can use it for ml purposes.

It’s why a lot of these campaigns about data ownership are being pushed. If the gov passes laws, it won’t be to the benefit of the individual but the data aggregators like Reddit, Shutterstock, etc.

They are playing on emotions and manipulating people into thinking killing AI FOSS and erecting data barriers is in their interest.

  • Copyrights and IP laws don’t only come into effect if profit is made. Fan products are usually tolerated by companies because it’s free advertising and fans get angry when it does get taken down.

When a fan product starts making money, it’s usually because it directly competes with the original IP and then they act. Even then, Etsy has thousands of shops with copyrighted content but the small profit loss doesnt justify the loss of reputation for the companies.

That being said, it’s the user who uploads it who is at fault and not the tool used to create it.

Ultimately, I think it’s the platforms that let users upload copyrighted content and celebrity likenesses that should be at fault. Take for example the Taylor Swift debacle. An image generator was used to create the images sure but twitter chose to let it float on their website for a whole day even though it was most likely reported in the first 5 minutes.

There’s also the fact that if we start demanding AI doesn’t use copyrighted content, it kills the open source scene and cements Google and Microsoft’s grip on our economy as we move towards an AI driven society.

  • That’s a wall of text but I will talk about you Elon Musk, gates, etc comment. The main ones pushing for regulations are specifically these groups.

If it becomes law that you can’t use scrapped material for AI, or all the material is poisoned, it absolutely kills any open source or small endeavor. Openai and company will happily pay for these databases, it means they keep their moat and are easily able to push subscribing services down our throats. The artists still wont get a dime since the dataset will come from instagram, Getty, adobe etc but the consumers will get heavily fucked.
