You would expose a single port to multiple vlans, and then bind multiple addresses to that single physical connected interface. Each service would then bind itself to the appropriate address, rather than “*”

You should consider reversing the roles. There’s no reason your homelab cannot be the client, and have your vps be the server. Once the wireguard virtual network exists, network traffic doesn’t really care which was the client and which was the server. Saves you from opening a port to attackers on your home network.

Did you ever get carbons working properly? (As in, mobile and desktop clients of the same user both getting messages and marking as read remotely between them)

I actually had one of these myself. I worked at a college help desk as a student, and I got a call and the guy said “every time I flush the toilet, Xbox live disconnects”

My first thought was that it was a joke, the absurdity of the thing right? I unironically asked if I was being pranked, and he said he knew we wouldn’t believe him so he made a video. Sure enough, he walks into the bathroom, flushes the toilet, and like 5s later his Xbox shows a disconnection message on the TV.

Absolutely dumbfounded, I sent the networking guys up to his room, and like all of these stories, it does have a reasonable explanation. They ran the xbox’s Ethernet cable under a rug that was in front of the bathroom. Every time someone went to the bathroom, they would step on the cable, and the Xbox would disconnect. The timeout was 30s or so, just long enough that they’d pee or flush the toilet or whatever before they noticed the disconnection.

There are also full-suites like rancher which will abstract away a lot of the complexity

It’s free, you host it yourself. It’s built off of nagios, compatible with nagios plugins, supports snmp or agent based checks. It can email, SMS, slack or discord you when something breaks, you can write your own custom checks in any language that can output to a local console… I could never imagine even looking for something else.

If one doesn’t exist, it would seem to be a fairly straightforward (if not a smidge tedious) thing to implement. Ever thought about learning web development?

If they don’t matter currently for moderation I have to imagine they’ll be part of a moderation toolkit eventually. Leveraging community voting to detect spam would be decently effective, especially for fresh accounts.

Hey now, lets not exaggerate and hyperbolize. There are types of non-ad data in this message. “Hello!” isn’t an ad. Neither are the links for “Pay Rent” or “Request Maintenance”. By pixel count that has to be at least 3% of the message!

Also, I’m sure there’s a tracking pixel somewhere, probably embedded in the CDNs for those images so that they can know when and where you opened this message, what type of device your on, etc. That’s creepy tracking data not advertising! (yet)

Most people should learn to live below their means. I see people that make as much as I do having multiple children, buying giant houses in really nice areas, and I can’t help but wonder what would happen if they lost their jobs with 0 notice. It probably would be catastrophic, but that risk is a choice. Conversely, I live like I make half as much as I do. Max out my retirement contributions every year, rent a much smaller apartment, etc. Maintenance is taken care of for me; I have a small amount of nice things; and if I lost my job I have months or years to find a new one before things would really get dire. Don’t get me wrong I’m planning to move in somewhere nicer and have kids soon too, but extended periods of living below your means allows one to save enough money to increase what their means can provide at the same income level. It also allows you to make migrations without the stress of what happens during the overlap in employment, living situation, insurance, etc. Wash, rinse, repeat. E.G, I fixed up a junkyard car by hand in high school and drove it for a decade so I could afford to buy a new car in cash instead of a lease or a payment with interest. Not having interest applied on top of the purchase made it a lot cheaper for me in the long run than the same vehicle would have been for others that stretched to purchase it. I’m not saying it doesn’t suck a little to see other people with things that I want, but I prefer the safety net I’ve built for myself. I think most people could benefit from a shift in perspective about what they can actually afford, and how they should choose to live their lives.

That sounds a lot closer to Canadian employment law, not US law. In most states, at-will employment is indefinitely 2-way. Employers are usually not required to give you any notice/reason/benefit beyond what is in the employment contract you sign. Conversely, employees have the same freedom. I’ve been at my job over ten years now and I could quit today with 0 notice or penalty. I don’t have to tell them why or where I’m going, just return my work equipment and collect a prorated final check. I could do a lot more damage to them than they could do to me and I like it that way.

It would be very easy to spoof those values in a handshake though, unless you’re proposing that in the initial data exchange a remote server gets a dump of every post and computationally verifies compliance.

Federated trust is an unsolved problem in computer science because of how complex of a problem it is.

It makes sense when you think about it, upstream is typically in the like 5-40mhz range, where downstream/tv is in the 40mhz-1ghz range. The splitting and routing is done at the analog level, similar to how a low-pass filter routes low frequencies to a subwoofer in a high-end audio setup.

You can’t just have a hardware low pass filter start filtering upstream traffic above what the equipment is designed for, and with frequencies that low there just isn’t the bandwidth for the throughput people want.

There is an actual technical reason for coax networks not being able to provide symmetrical speeds. It has to do with what frequencies (channels) are dedicated to data uplink, data downlink, and cable TV. Cable TV is still the cash cow for coax providers, and installing appropriate channel splitters network-wide to reallocate higher-bandwidth channels to data uplink would result in days or weeks of downtime for cable subscribers, not to mention the crippling amount of money in new hardware. It is a consequence of how the networks were physically built when providers thought that cable and download speeds were all anyone needed; it’s not just a software switch they can flip if they wanted to.

Spectrum still sucks, but asymmetrical Internet speeds are not one of the things they suck at on purpose.

A raspberry pi or orange pi could definitely run all of those things at very low power consumption.
