  • Different places have different ways of doing things. One of the recent online courses I saw was step by step, and each step opened as soon as you finished the first.

Once everything is online - the assignments, the test, the proctors watching you take the test, the grading for the test being automatic - it’s no longer as important for those places to schedule everything exactly. It’s also incredibly different in the experience, because the chance of an actual professor teaching is incredibly slim. They have you just reading the textbook and being referred to youtube videos.

  • I’ve heard plenty of the usual stereotypes passed along by americans. When it comes right down to it, most people are happy to repeat what they’ve heard about any ‘others.’ It really takes someone special to fight against that by trying to not have ‘others’ in their life (i.e. by accepting all as their in-group).

  • If you really want to get into the weeds, you get one half of your chromosomes from your mother, and one half from your father (most of the time, oh boy!), which should start the train rolling on the 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16… BUT there is a chance for crossover events, where the chromosomes can, well, cross over each other and exchange parts of themselves. So your dad should be passing on 1/4 of your genes from his mother, and 1/4 of your genes from his father (and even that isn’t 100% true, the only certain one would be if you’re a male, you’re going to get your grandfather’s Y gene, you could get 23 of your grandmother’s chromosomes and none from your grandfather), but he might pass on 52/106 of your grandmother’s genes (not chromosomes, to those of you counting along at home… and I’m not saying you only have 106 genes, good lord) to you, and 54/106 of your grandfather’s genes.

And that’s just getting started on genetic funkiness.

  • It’s not about the company being responsible. I’m more referring to the hosts of the session being able to pursue legal action, or press charges. In the eyes of the court, would you be accessing (one of the ways to run afoul of that texas law) the hosts’ “computer systems” running the zoom software, or are you accessing Zoom’s computer systems? Is Zoom able to be run on your local server, or is everything processed on their end?

In either case, could they say that you were accessing those computer systems without the owner’s consent (one of the conditions for the crime I quoted)? The failure to set a password, giving out the password publicly, and maybe your option #5 might ways that a lawyer could construed as them giving ‘everyone’ permission to come, and thus void the crime… but we’re also talking about texas, and the law down there is as flippant as it is in the extreme court.

I want to give people things to think about before they did this, considering that the minimum level of crime they’ll be looking at carries up to 180 days in jail. Definitely use a burner phone, VPN, and every other way to cover your tracks.

  • In their definitions?

Hormones are messengers that communicate between cells around the entire body, and are typically released into the blood to be distributed (thus their systemic effects). This is in contrast to communicative messengers that specifically target a cell, such as neurotransmitters, or paracrine messengers, which pass signals from a cell to other nearby cells.

Steroids are one example of hormones, and are usually cholesterol derivatives. The famous steroids you are familiar with are testosterone (which has several forms) and estrogen (which has several forms). Steroids are lipid-soluble, which means they can enter your cells through the plasma membrane without needing transporters. They then interface with systems inside of your cell, and typically will cause a formed complex to move from the cytoplasm to your nucleus, where they will interface with your DNA and begin promoting a specific gene or gene series.

Other hormones include modified amino acids, such as thyroid hormone, or proteins, like insulin.

  • Why not just do the prosleeper thing, and use the fitted sheet like a sleeping bag? Let the elastic bits cocoon you snugly by pulling the left and right sides over each other. You could put the pillow outside of the cocoon, and have the elastic bit on your neck if you like a little scratch on it at night, but I prefer the pillow to be pulled lightly into the back of my head for ultimate sheet snuggles.
