A federated plattform without capital would never get as big, because they dont have the resources to attract more customers via offline ads, apps and better product development.
Just being the best or fairest platform is not enough to be successful.

It’s not the web developers making the decisions, but marketing and management. Otherwise websites would respect “do not track”, or have an “opt out of all cookies” button instead of an “accept all cookies” button.

Well, more complex modern software has an higher risk of (yet unknown) vulnerabilities.

I see you never worked in a developer team. My current boss once in 1995 opened a geocities page about someones poodle and favorite girl-band. After 3 minutes on that page he proudly declared “I now know everything there is to know about HTML and user interface design, and never have to see another website ever again!”
Since then, he is making designs, and the tiniest amout of criticism or improvements (“maybe we should have a placeholder telling users what format we expect here.”, “Can we use a date-input instead of a textfield here?”) is shot down with a 5 minute yelling how “the users just have to learn this” and “we always have done it this way!” or “if the user is too stupid, he should read the manual” (which is incomplete and still features windows XP+IE6 screenshots). There is an option in the bug tracking system which says “user error/user training required”, but if you read it it’s really all huge usabillity issues because people cannot figure it out, and the system has no helpfull error messages…
Serious question: what’s the deal with iHeartRadio? It seems like they are involved in podcasts and the local radio station, but I usually download my mp3 and don’t use apps, so not sure what’s going on there…?

Because at this time the internet was still slow, not always on and optional on most computers, and Microsoft did not know if and how they should integrate the internet into the OS. The only thing they had at the time was some link to MSN on the desktop, and activeX (???) Where you could display websites on your desktop or within your program, but without the Browser controlls.
I’m to scared to verify this…
The could make everything above 1080 quality subscription only, or charge uploaders for the storage. This would probably also cut down on the low quality spam Channels that only exists for ad revenue…
“controlling people from theirself” also prevents them from drunk driving and killing others.

There is an enterprise windows version that comes without tracking, telemetry and auto installed crapware, but it costs more.

Still, someone has to finance it. In the worst case you have a high speed rail network with high operationg costs that nobody uses, but taxpayers still need to maintain.
How is this a “billionaire commune”, when the price is a fraction of a standard 2-bedroom house or even a motorhome, and pretty much everyone can move in?
